J.Crew's Spring Collection: Bright, Offbeat and Brilliant

Spring has sprung at J.Crew and, like usual, Jenna Lyons makes us want to shamelessly spend our entire savings on a new wardrobe. What starts out as a seemingly obvious repeat of September’s trends – i.e. neutral shades, tailored silhouettes and reinvented minimalism – quickly transforms into a collection of relaxed ensembles in bright colors that is both refreshing and intriguing.

Opening with a number of white, ivory and cream looks that quickly segue into bold oranges, yellows, blues and greens, J.Crew’s spring/summer 2011 collection is a refreshing take on next season’s trends. The silhouettes, ranging from a shorts-and-blazer combo to an elegant maxi dress topped with a belted trench, provide an interesting mix of unexpected ensembles appropriate for both work and play. Bringing a bit of her own aesthetic to the lineup, Lyons incorporates that unique style of über glam paired with everyday basics into her designs and ensures that the brand’s signature offbeat edge is felt in each look. And while we’ve seen the rumpled twill shorts and neutral toned utility wear many times before, a few stand-out pieces transform the collection into an impressive display of sartorial craftsmanship – the maxi blush colored skirt, satin yellow shorts with the ruffle at the hip, and the full sequined floor-length skirt particularly caught our eyes.

What has traditionally been a go-to for put-together style and buttoned-up conservatism has seemingly found its ideal niche in the quirky and even fanciful realm of today’s fashion landscape. The brand’s spring collection stays true to this eccentric aesthetic and offers an unmistakable display of the offbeat charm and disheveled nonchalance now synonymous with the J.Crew name.

Pretty and Youthful at Collette Dinnigan

Youthful purity seemed to be the running theme of Collette Dinnigan’s spring/summer 2011 collection. Skewing just this side of tween-set territory, Dinnigan presented a lineup of girlish frocks and cute silhouettes in spring-appropriate cottons and lace. Not only did her collection recall the carefree days of girlhood summers, it provided that bit of sartorial nonchalance so often coveted for warm weather wardrobes.

Eyelet dresses and hushed tones inundated the designer’s runway, epitomizing the theme of sprightly innocence. Daisy-print bloomers and lace skirts were interspersed with high-waisted sailor shorts and sheer button-down blouses. A few splashes of yellows and reds contrasted the abundance of virginal whites, while bits of black and navy brought an unexpected – and very slight – “cool” factor to the show. And while Dinnigan’s young muse seemed to be spending most of her time lolling by the sea or frolicking in the French countryside, an array of glittering dresses ensured a bit of glam necessary for those city soirées.

While nothing extremely groundbreaking was presented this season, Dinnigan gave the fashion world yet another reliable collection. Full of pretty pieces and playful silhouettes, the designer’s lineup provides just the right amount of energy to contrast the current focus on stringent minimalism, lest we begin to take ourselves too seriously.

Show-stopping Exuberance at Galliano

Sheer outrageousness and over-the-top extravagance are synonymous with a John Galliano affair, and, like his collection for Dior, the designer’s spring/summer 2011 namesake show was no exception. Bright lights and eccentricity oozed from the runway at the grand Opéra Comique and brought the designer’s propensity for theatrics to the forefront of Paris Fashion Week.

Never one for following trends, the designer forged a new path again this season with Maria Lani-inspired looks that brought a much-needed break from placid minimalism to the fashion world. Tulle head scarves and lace miniskirts outfitted models as they emulated different portraits of the infamous Lani, and a glittering backdrop set the scene for the early twentieth century story.

And as hard as it sometimes may be to concentrate on the clothes at one of Galliano’s productions, the looks this season showcased what the designer does best – create impeccable pieces with remarkable flair. Crystal-encrusted gowns and luxurious outerwear were on point for the 1920s setting, while thigh-grazing skirts and belted blazers brought the collection into the twenty-first century. But without the theatrics of a Galliano show and the flashy style of Maria Lani fresh on your mind, completely sheer dresses and daytime negligés may seem out of place for a woman of today.

Nonetheless, with a show that boasts models carrying gilded frames and a shower of gold confetti at the end, Galliano reminds us of his unparalleled vision and the undeniable force he holds in the fashion industry.

Fur for Spring at J. Mendel

Who says fur isn’t for spring? Gilles Mendel, that’s who. With images of ballerinas still pirouetting in his head after a recent costume designing stint for the New York City Ballet, Gilles dotted his dance inspired collection with Tibetan lamb and shadow fox fur. The designer pitted his typically winter-appropriate boleros and vests as the “new little summer sweater,” bringing a whole new meaning to warm weather outerwear.

And as for the rest of the collection? Hushed silver dresses and blushed cream gowns poured over models in elegant tulle and chiffon, letting Mendel’s propensity for the dance take center stage. Satin bows and divine ruching kept the collection luxe while surprising – though not overwhelming – oranges and reds brought forth a sense of playfulness that has become ubiquitous with the designer’s aesthetic.

And while Mendel’s collection – from its fur and feathers to its ice-like hues – seems perhaps more fit for a whimsy winter wonderland than a sultry summer day, his beautifully constructed and ultimately wearable pieces position this as a covetable collection for the upcoming season.

Girly with a Twist at Lela Rose

There is rarely – if ever – a time that I'm not loving the latest and greatest from Lela Rose. And the Texas native's SS2011 collection is no exception. Rose's newest lineup has all the elements of the classic Lela Rose aesthetic we’ve come to know and love, with a few surprises mixed in.

This season, gorgeous gowns mingle with playful shorts while outdoorsy jackets compliment ladylike skirts and tops. There is no shortage of pretty dresses, and the designer was sure to incorporate the hushed colors du jour into her motif. What is not so expected – and quite refreshing from a typically girly uptown designer – are a bold pair of black and white striped pants – very downtown – and fabrics that show just enough skin to perhaps be described as “risqué." Delicious summer colors splashed throughout an otherwise tranquil pallet keep the element of surprise at the forefront of the collection, while vibrant prints ensure a sense of playfulness and energy in Lela’s looks.

Beautiful Darkness at Cushnie et Ochs

Leather seemed to be the word on the street – er, runway – again at Cushnie et Ochs this season. Leather shorts, leather pants, leather blazers, and even a winged leather dress graced the line’s Spring 2011 runway and reemphasized the designers’ propensities for edgy pieces and tough silhouettes.

Although the design duo, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs, were aiming for a “slightly menacing” tone, according to Style.com’s review, they managed to incorporate into their collection the softer aesthetic and neutral color palette that is oh-so-popular right now. Edgy pleated minis were paired with almost flesh-toned tanks and floral print lilac dresses romanticized the otherwise minimalist collection. Nonetheless, from the dimly lit runway to the models floating by with un-coiffed hair and white eyeliner, Cushnie and Ochs achieved that element of eerie etherealness they seemed to be vying for.

And even though a theme of darkness and menace is a bit off-putting at first, every one of Cushnie et Ochs's spring looks can be worn - without fear - in our everyday lives.

Down-to-Earth Charm at Rachel Comey

Cool classics, girly silhouettes and quietly sexy looks abounded on the runway of Rachel Comey’s Spring 2011 collection. Moving slightly away from her oft-eccentric aesthetic, Comey presented a warm weather collection overflowing with understated elegance and subtle refinement – without being the least bit boring.

The show opened with a gaggle of simply tailored black and white ensembles and slowly progressed into easy breezy shorts and skirts splashed with muted colors and neutral tones. Comey’s folksy mainstays – loose-fitting separates and flowy dresses – work alongside work-appropriate tailored button-ups and jackets, making the collection realistic and totally wearable.

From its modest and nonchalant attitude, to its innately hippie-ish vibe, Rachel Comey’s spring collection exudes just enough effortless charm needed for any sultry and sunny day.

Runway Review: Cool Classics Take Center Stage at Organic by John Patrick

What do you get when you cross the classic prep of American fashion and the Parisienne chic of French lines? Organic by John Patrick.

At his presentation on the unofficial start of New York Fashion Week, John Patrick, designer of the line, Organic, showcased beautiful pieces that could easily have been the outcome of a J.Crew and Chloé love affair. From pleated olive shorts to white lace trousers to grey tops mixed with – surprise – grey bottoms, Patrick hit all the high notes of the latest fashion trends seen on both the U.S. and French runways.

Neutral tones, refined lines and girly details are the anchors of Patrick’s Spring 2011 collection. Beginning with a cream shorts-and-blazer combo, the collection moves from classic look to classic look, reminding fashion insiders of the bold statement subtle silhouettes and impeccable detail can make. Continuing with American nostalgia, conservative skirts and prairie dresses reminiscent of Sara Plain and Tall and Laura Ingalls are interspersed among the more modern trousers-and-button-down looks. The practicality and wearability that has recently become essential in fashion is an innate part of Organic’s SS2011 collection. Who wouldn’t want to sport a dandy floral shell and cuffed cotton shorts in the sweltering summer sun?

While mixing the simple with the daring – ahem, a completely sheer nude blouse – Patrick shows that he has American classics down to a T – or would that be “tee”? The collection exudes the cool attitude that any East Coaster, Southern Belle, or California Beach Babe always has packed in her fashion arsenal. From can’t-live-without-‘em button-downs to comfy chic shorts – and even an over-the-top huge floppy hat perfect for those times when you just want to make a statement – Organic’s latest collection is one that fashion frontrunners around the country are sure to be flocking to come Spring.

Viva Gen Art: Talent Incubator to get Possible Revival

The fashion industry has suffered much loss and tragedy this year -– to say the least. From the passing of one of the world’s most brilliant artists, Alexander McQueen, to the au revoir bid to Bryant Park (although much excitement abounds for New York Fashion Week’s new home at Lincoln Center), the fashion populace has shed many a tear. But one of the most shocking and perhaps unexpected misfortunes endured could be finding some light at the end of the tunnel.

In May, Gen Art, a 16-year-old organization well known and respected for showcasing and supporting emerging talent in the art, music, film and fashion industries, hung up its hat after a valiant struggle against the recession. But this week, WWD reported that Gen Art may get a second wind. According to the publication’s Web site, Gen Art has been in talks with various companies, including IMG, UEG, Hachette and Gilt Groupe, about a possible acquisition and revitalization of the organization.

Ian Gerard, CEO and co-founder of Gen Art, is optimistic in the organization’s revival. “We believe there will be a second coming of Gen Art,” he states. “The brand has too much value, credibility and a loyal following among consumers and entertainment talent to just disappear.”

WWD also reports that Gerard predicts such a deal may be forged as early as the middle of next month.

The possible resurgence of the organization responsible for Fresh Faces in Fashion in Chicago, the Vanguard Art Fair in Miami and the Gen Art Film Festival in NYC is a welcome relief in the midst of 2010’s turbulent fashion skies. With Gen Art acting as a launching platform for much of the emerging talent we see year after year, its disappearance would be a true tragedy for the art world.

July Trends: Fur, Wool and Boots?

July has arrived and you know what that means: fur is here to stay, chunky knit legwear is all the rage and warm muted tones are perfect for cooler temperatures. Wait, what season are we in? To the common consumer, the warm rays and climbing temperatures of July are sure signs that summer is well under way. To the biggest names in fashion media, however, the summer months signify – for some unfathomable reason – that fall looks and autumn trends should now be pushed into the forefronts of our minds. Enter July’s “Fall Fashion Preview” issues.

For as long as I can remember, and I’m sure for some time before that, the fashion industry has been one that is ahead of the curve, increasingly to a fault. Coats and boots are shown on the dawn of the (actual) spring season and swimsuits and sunnies grace runways in September. While it is understandable that these advanced timing measures must be taken for logistical reasons and business planning purposes, what’s not so clear is why practices that challenge logical thinking (i.e. fall looks in spring and spring looks in fall) show up in other facets of the industry, and are pushed forcefully into the minds of consumers. Fashion’s biggest media outlets and retail stores advocate cold weather ensembles in the high heat of summer, confusing consumers, and frankly, turning us off to the trends that are coming up next.

Why is it that June and July have been christened as “Fall Fashion Preview” months? Is it that there is nothing the fashion world finds noteworthy to discuss during summer? (I would certainly hope this is not the case, as the summer season hosts the renowned CFDA awards, the Resort collections, and so much more). The most powerful magazines in the industry dedicate their summer issues to looking at trends that are to come so far in the future, that the content seems irrelevant and out of place. Why would readers care about new trends for sweaters and tights when temperatures outside are flirting with triple digits? Coverage of the fashion industry has become so out-of-sync with reality that it is – sadly – becoming irrelevant to our real lives.

Featuring trends from the most recent shows soon after they happen makes much more sense than doing so smack dab in the middle of summer, when the excitement of February has passed and the anticipation of September hasn’t yet set in. And a “preview,” if there is to be one at all, should be just that: a sampling of some of the most intriguing looks from the most recent runways, not a whole July issue dedicated to tweed jackets and wool leggings we’ll be wearing in November.

This untimely trend is not only seen in magazines, either. Retail stores are increasingly stocking floors with items so out-of-season, that we’re buying swimsuits in December and January and fur in May and June (as Plum Sykes points out in recent Vogue article, “Seasons of Our Discontent”). How are we supposed to thoroughly enjoy trends in fashion when we can’t put them to use in our real lives?

I don’t know about you, readers, but in July, I like to daydream about the beautiful sundresses and comfy shorts I can wear to lounge in the warm sun, not about the fantastic wool sweater I’ll be sporting to ward off the chill of fall.

Continuing with reviews of the couture shows, I'm moving on to Givenchy, which is a show that is always nothing less than spectacular.

Tisci impresses audiences again with his stunning construction and imaginative inspiration. The Givenchy lineup usually consists of looks with an edgy, structural feel, and this time was no different. However, along with his sharp lines and definitive tailoring, Tisci combined softer layers and brighter colors, resulting in ironic structured ruffles and soft tailored looks.

And you can always count on the Givenchy creative director to incorporate feathers and various types of hair into a collection. Feathered shorts and mohair vests abounded, leaving me intrigued and a bit hesitant, all at the same time.

Hair or no hair, the Givenchy collection was impressive, as usual. Can't wait to see what crazy creations Tisci has come up for this upcoming RTW season.

Chanel

I'm a little confused by this couture season's Chanel show. When I sat down to view the looks, I was so excited to see classic billows of lace, crazy head adornments that are ironically alluring and beautiful gowns beyond belief. What I saw was a little different. Tweed suit after ordinary tweed suit walked down the runway and every look seemed to be just a slight variation of the one before...until we got to the cocoon dresses. I just didn't see the amazing creativity and imaginative creations we normally see from Lagerfeld.

Granted, the tweed suit will always be included in a Chanel show...I have come to accept, and appreciate this fact. But, we usually see these classic elements interspersed with numerous gowns that make you want to have galas and balls to attend every night, and elaborate cocktail dresses that could be put on display in museums for their impeccably creative construction.

Although the colors were great (well, minus the silver - not so great), they were on par and very much the trend we're seeing in the rest of the fashion world. Usually we see so much more inventiveness from Lagerfeld and things that are truly his own, not pastels that everyone is using and cocoon shapes that were shown two seasons ago.

I love Chanel, but this collection just didn't impress me the way the collections normally do. I look forward to more next season.

Couture Couture

SO excited about the couture show reviews coming out. Since I couldn't be there in person - hopefully that day will come soon ;) - the style.com reviews are my entryway into the wonderful world of crazy couture. My appreciation and fascination with this type of design have grown exponentially over the past two years, and I am thus very excited to do some posts on the collections!

So let's start with Dior. O.M.G. I could die looking at Galliano's beautiful pieces that seemingly floated - or cracked their whips - down the runway. And there was a little bit of everything...equestrian dominatrices, elegant tea-party goers, and extravagant ladies-in-waiting (that are very reminiscent, although much less elaborate, of the designer's Fall 2004 couture collection).

After gaining his inspiration from a trip to the Met - resulting in the most romantic story of epiphany, naturally - the designer sent plaid skirts, top hats, lace-draped hats, and full-bustled skirts down the runway in the most elegant incarnations imaginable. I can't get enough of the images!

Another successful - extraordinary, even - collection under the Dior designer's belt...but really, are we at all surprised?

New season? Or just the same old stuff??

Something I've been noticing lately is the fashion world's excitement about designers' "new" looks for each upcoming season. Last season it was the rock-chic tough-girl looks, 80s throw-backs and all things black that made fashion hearts flutter...this season, it's pastel and muted colors complimenting over-sized jackets and front-pleated pants reminiscent, again, of the 80s and 90s--this time more equalling those decades' working-women looks.

What I don't understand is how we get so excited about trends that we've seen--and hated--before. Shoulder pads, the bane of our mothers' existence, are suddenly "super cool" to Gen Y; grunge looks that our older sisters, cousins, and yes, brothers wore, are back with an "exciting" vengeance (although they are again on their way out). Is it that each season's trends are simply so new and different from the previous season that they give our eyes a much needed rest from over-exposure (to whatever the look du jour is)? Or is it that the fashion greats have already created everything there is to create? What is it about these tired trends that keeps us drooling for more?

I am very perplexed, and very annoyed, with this trend in fashion. I want to get excited about something new, something great, something I've never seen before (and I am certainly not talking about this obscene "no pants" trend that Lady Gaga has popularized)--truly beautiful clothes--truly innovative art--true fashion. I think Alexander McQueen would agree with me on this one.

And, I was thrilled to find the delectable treat that is Coco+Kelley. Cassandra Lavalle intrigues her readers with a mix of fashion, lifestyle and all things luxe. This is a beautifully constructed blog that I'm excited to dive into!

In the absence of my beloved Domino, I'm so pleased to have found these two on-line gems, and can not wait to find new tips and tricks to leading an incredibly stylish life!

Sex & the City

I popped in my Sex & the City Movie DVD last night, and instantly felt a rush of nostalgia come over me. I remembered how excited I was (and still am) to see that movie. One of the most exhilarating parts for me was the amazing fashion! The lovely foursome strutted their best couture stuff in their re-debut...and they all looked fabulous doing so! I still get so thrilled to see the amazing ensembles the great Pat Field dreamt up!

Fall09 vs. Spring10

Last season's tents were filled with strong trends seemingly fit for...a rocker? a masochist? a clown who is angry at the world? All of the above, I would venture to say. Huge shoulders, sequins to last a lifetime, black black and more black, spikes, studs and other "tough" embellishments, teeny dresses with the poofiest of poof skirts, and over-the-top statement makeup. And lest we forget the thigh-bearing micro minis with hints of 80's ruffles that made their comeback.

Fall 2009 RTW was a season of dark everything...fabics, makeup, attitudes and economic climate. Everyone from Gucci to Balmain to even the customarily girly designers such as Erin Fetherston jumped on the "somber is better" bandwagon, with many looks turning into parodies of themselves.

And then came Spring.

This season's collections were (refreshingly) presented with a lighter air about them. Color returned (even if muted and pastel), tan leather abounded, and, yes, a return to the feminine. And it seems like the fashion populace is rejoicing!

So, what do you think? Are you celebrating this return to the positive? I loved the tough-chic looks of late, but am definitely breathing a slight sigh of relief now that everything is not skin-tight, thigh-high and requiring a brooding aura anymore. With the economy improving (seemingly so, anyway), I think we're moving into a more positive period in general. Is this going to continue to effect the fashions we see? I hope so!

I think there will be a slow transition period from dark and heavy to bright and light (as there were definite remnants of the dark trend on the spring runways), and I'm excited to see how the street-style mavens combine these two trends!

Peggy Guggenheim

The fabulous Ms. Peggy Guggenheim was certainly one to watch in the art world of the 20th century. This patroness of the arts turned from an extravagant heiress and socialite into an astute (yet, still extravagant) art collector. Peggy was a revolution in and of herself; besides being an avid proponent of the expressionist movement, she flaunted her sexual endeavors and individually brought many an artist to fame (namely, Jackson Pollock).

Although she much preferred to spend her time and efforts on paintings, structures and photos, Ms. Guggenheim was extremely flamboyant, yet particularly spectacular, with her fashion as well. Her most striking wearables were the outrageous accessories she sported; to the opening of her gallery in New York City, she wore one earring by Tanguy, and another by Alexander Calder, to show appreciation for both designers. She also employed Edward Melcarth to design her famous bat-wing sunglasses, presumably to wear often in the Venetian sun.

The tempestuous history of Peggy Guggenheim makes for a remarkable story that so many look upon with respect and appreciation. Whatever social norms she may have broken and contempt she may have aroused, Ms. Guggenheim's contribution to 20th-century art is something that can never be dismantled.

Brian Reyes

Even though the chic set is currently sporting very edgy ensembles with so much adornment you often don't know where to focus your gaze (i.e. huge shoulders, leather jackets, leather dresses, leather shorts, studs, spikes, etc), it's so refreshing, and exciting, to see a collection made up entirely of classic pieces. Brian Reyes gave us such a collection this fashion week.

Simple dresses, relaxed shorts and floaty tops make up Reyes's collection. Jakcets and pants also have a place in the lineup, and the designer does not leave fans thirsty for glam--he was careful to include a few all-black looks that would be perfect for a mid-summer beach fête. This collection is the perfect example of the wardrobe I think the fashion world will be craving for spring (perhaps in attempt to get away from the overdone 80s vibe).

With very little color and silhouettes that allow mixing, matching and longevity, Reyes has given his customers pieces they will live in for the warm months of 2010. Bravo!

When I heard Alexander Wang's collection featured pieces with a sportswear and jock vibe, I was a bit hesitant and not too excited about this illusive theme. However, when I did go to check out the looks, I was pleasantly (to say the least) surprised!

You can indeed see the football and varsity inspiration throughout the collection, but Wang projected this feel so subtly and seamlessly that it's not overbearing and definitely does not conjure up images of overdone plaid miniskirts and blue and gold striped cardigans that the theme so typically calls to mind.

Wang's pieces are a great compliment to the structured, perhaps even rigid, ensembles we've been seeing lately in the fashion world. The tough-chic trend (I know I keep harping on that term), sometimes even borders on restrictive and confining (i.e. bondage body-con dresses and jackets with over-sized shoulders and skin-tight arms). The soft fabrics of choice mixed with khaki, gray and a lighter hunter green are a refreshing change of pace.

Can't believe the first of the Spring2010 collections are out already! As of day two of NYFW, there are tons of great pieces to lust over.

I'm particularly loving Jen Kao's RTW line. Amazing draping, impeccable sheer fabrics and strong shapes are all characteristics the designer added to her warm weather repertoire. Kao based her collection off incredible neutral pieces that can be mixed and matched and carried over to the rest of one's wardrobe. The line had the right amount of structure and edge mixed with a perfectly soft color palette that proved to be a great way to bring the tough-chic trend into the new season!

My favorite parts of the collection: this amazing flowy gown and those fierce ankle-ruffle shoes!

I watched the premiere of The Rachel Zoe Project this past Monday and FELL IN LOVE with Rachel Zoe!! I had seen her show a couple times last season, but never became an avid follower; now, I can not get enough!

Miss Zoe is an amazing stylist who appears to have a real passion and natural intuition for fashion. I am ALWAYS entranced by the ensembles she dons and the advice she gives to her fashionista fans. She takes amazing fashion risks and I have such respect for her en vogue endeavors.

I picked up the September issue of Marie Claire last week and was thrilled to see that my fave, Ashley Olsen, was gracing the cover.

Her spread is absolutely stunning. Miss Olsen dons lacy boudoir ensembles and soft vintage looks that give the photos a seductive yet casual and natural feel.

A Taste of Fall

I'm so excited for fall to roll around and even though it doesn't get cold until about November here in Texas (boo!!!), I've already been working on my shopping list for the new season.

The first thing I'm coveting for fall is a faux fur vest. I saw them everywhere in New York, and I'm so excited to find one! It would be great for Texas, too, since you often don't need a heavy coat. The one here is by A Common Thread.

I've also been loving riding boots for the last couple seasons and have decided it's finally time to invest in some. These boots from Frye are lovely!

I'm also a huge fan of leggings and am ready for some really exciting ones. I'm loving these slashed ones from David Lerner and these lace ones from Kova & T. Gorgeous!

These are some of my favorite purchases from my summer in New York. I go shopping ALL the time - cause it's SO good here, and a great way to explore different neighborhoods - and thus, I've acquired lots of really good finds!

I've ran across tons of great vintage stores; mostly in the West Village, but the blue striped tank I got from Amarcord in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The white shorts are from Second Time Around in Soho - SUCH a great shop! They have designer items for really great prices - these are Juicy Couture shorts for $30!!!

I've also been LOVING Topshop!! I've been there three times already! :D I'm addicted - but it's just so good! The grey off-the-shoulder shirt is from there along with the fringe sandals. The flower print mini is from Zara - another one of my big-chain loves.

And yes, those are biker shorts you see! They're from American Apparel and I can't wait to try them out! It's a little bold for my style, but I'm excited, nonetheless.

It's also a thrill to shop all the street vendors in Soho 'cause there's always such interesting and amazing pieces! The three bracelets are all from street vendors. No worries, I don't plan to wear them all at once ;) .

In continuing my effort to engage in as many New York experiences as possible, I went to the city's annual Pride Parade a few weeks ago. Not being a member of this community and not having anything like this in Texas, I didn't realize what an event this was (as there were thousands of spectators lining the streets from about 53rd Street all the way down to Christopher Street) and was so touched to see how everyone had so much pride for themselves and their peers. Of course, I was intrigued by the different outfits worn by attendees, the purple t-shirt with star earrings in particular. This is definitely an event to remember!

CFDA Awards

So I'm a little late on this post, but I thought I would give it a go anyway. I was so lucky to get to attend the 2009 CFDA awards a couple weeks ago with my internship at KCD! It was absolutely amazing. I got to help set up the red carpet and escort media as they arrived in preparation of the big event.

Celeb sightings were plentiful. Fashion's biggest players were in attendance including the fabulous, amazing, gorgeous Diane von Furstendberg, Marc Jacobs (and beau Lorenzo Martone), Linda Fargo, the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte and many many more. I don't usually get too crazy about actresses, singers, etc, but when Ashley Olsen strolled in in her amazing dress from the Row, I was swooning (while keeping (almost) completely composed on the oustide, bien sûr)!

KCD did a fabulous job producing this event and can indeed add another CFDA awards show to their list of successes. I am so blessed to have gotten to attend such a noteworthy event and will never forget this night!

Very exciting day yesterday at KCD! All the interns got to venture across the street to watch the DVF resort show at the DVF showroom in NYC. I was in the very very back, and didn't get to see much, but was still thrilled none the less. The showroom is GORGEOUS...pink walls, black-and-white pictures, and mirrors everywhere! The University of Texas campus exuded high style this past April at its annual senior fashion show. This year, about 30 design students sent ready-to-wear collections and formal dresses down the runway to show their semester-long work.

These are some of my favorites from the show. Exquisite construction and amazing designs could be seen in each collection. There were a lot of conversion pieces, like the black and hot pink hooded top that could be changed into a shirt with a train. The black/white collection was also amazing and totally wearable. And I have to make special mention of the white pin-stripe pants with the amazing hip draping...my absolute FAVORITE piece of the whole show!

Rachel Roy, and her marketing/PR team at Jones Apparel Group, is doing a brilliant job promoting her brand and new diffusion line, Rachel Roy for Macy's Collection. Just goes to show that PR really is the main weapon in one's marketing/promotion arsenal.

Twitter, blogs, Facebook...Roy is really working the PR and social networking hotspots...and I would say, it's working for her! I've already began following her on Twitter, through her other followers' many tweets and twitpics, and have become a fan of her page on Facebook.

She's also targeting bloggers...another brilliant move in this new game of social networking. Getting earned media mentions is an amazing step toward making your brand a powerhouse player in the online communities (which, by the way, are the new center of the media world).

Props to Rachel Roy!!

Seeing Colors

A trend that has been lingering around the fashion world for a while now is the sporting of brightly colored tights. Many fashion-forward filles have been trading in their basic blacks for cheerier, more eye-catching varieties. This style hasn't quite taken the fashion world by storm, as of yet, but many designers have ventured into the new land of candy-colored gams. Fashion greats such as Anna Sui, Marc Jacobs and Betsey Johnson (although, not too surprising coming from Betsey) sent model after model down their fall 2009 RTW runways with legs covered in every color, from bright blue to lipstick red, and even shades of yellow.

This trend is certainly not for the shy or attention-averted. If you don't want to stand out as much as someone wearing one of Anna Sui's shimmery blue tights would, there are plenty of not-so-bold options out there. Designers--and retailers--are displaying warmer shades of tights, such as a deep red, plum or navy. There are even the more sheer options, which give you all the fun with less of the "look at me" factor.

I'm loving this trend, but will probably be easing into it with some more subtle versions. But who knows, by the time next winter rolls around, I could be one of those brave souls daring through the cold in fuschia or mustard-covered legs!

P.S. One color I hope never catches on: white

So, BIG (huge, actually) news for something's-a-buzz...I will be relocating to New York this summer for two fabulous internships in fashion! KCD and Wise & Comp will be my two employment homes for summer 2009 and I CAN'T WAIT! Living at Columbia and working with these two amazing companies is sure to bring about some amazing new adventures...so, get ready for a whole new perspective!

Power Issue

I am so inspired by Anna Wintour's "letter from the editor" in this month's Vogue! In these tough times, we need to remember that we can, and will, survive. Wintour touts the drive and ambition of the American people that will pull us through to the other side of this rough patch. The American people "are a resourceful and resilient people who have survived far worse" and are equipped and ready to face today's problems head on. Wintour also finds the reality in the situation, stating that we need not "exchange one bubble--that of euphoric consumerism--for another, that of funereal pessimism" as we band together and progress through these times. I think this is brilliant! Let's be realistic from both ends of the spectrum--let's not go spend all of our last dollars willy-nilly on frivolous, non-necessary things, but let's also not shut down all together and hide in our basements scared to come out until the tough times have subsided. It's important to maintain a positive mentality while still realizing that there is a long road to recovery ahead of us!

Wintour also instilled such a sense of pride for me in the fashion industry! The editor-in-chief so cleverly, and bluntly, stated that "when people stop shopping, other people lose their jobs. So there is no moral high ground to be gained by abstaining from felicity." I love it! So, for all those out there that continue to view the fashion industry as a frivolous sector of business only suited for those who are shallow enough to spend time and effort caring about looks and the latest and greatest, think again! This industry is huge, vital and here to stay.

I wasn't familiar with Collette Dinnigan until I browsed through her fall 2009 RTW slideshow on style.com, and I must say, I am très impressionnée! The designer executed beautiful sheer lace tops with impeccable black skirts...short, long, elaborate and simple. The gowns were also amazing! Ivory silk with an embellished neckline and black tulle with a belted blazer. I will definitely be keeping up with this designer!

I am lovin' me some Chloé lately!! After a stunning Spring 2009 RTW line (adorable shorts, scalloped edges, perfect neutrals, oh my!) Hannah MacGibbon showed a just-as-sweet collection for this upcoming fall. I absolutely adore the gray striped jacket with over-sized sleeves (almost resembling a cape of sorts, but still a very functional coat) and the navy velour belted blazer with the perfect girly ruffles at the hip. I am also glad to see that blazers are still in for fall, as I have just invested in one, myself. ;) Already looking forward to MacGibbon's next collection!

Stability needed

Even though I get what Viktor & Rolf were going for in their recent runway show in Paris (stability exuded from Grecian statues, embodied in their modern-day models), I'm not so sure the execution was as impactful as intended. Instead of resembling Greek goddesses, models looked more like unhappy, unexciting clowns...perhaps even mimes. I do applaud the design duo on weaving together the show idea and their exquisite ready-to-wear constructions, but the makeup on the models stretched (and perhaps even took away from) the idea.

White is the new black

It's a new year, we have a new president and it's a new season of fashion weeks. 2009 is off to an enthusiastic start, and Karl Lagerfeld's almost-all-white couture collection is the perfect representation of this feeling of "newness." As we transition from a period of darkness and doubt, everything from press to fashion is reflecting a sense of reinvigoration and optimism. Even though Lagerfeld's collection is shown in the home-town of his label's namesake, the hopefulness that his white palette exudes is noticed and felt by the fashion industry around the world. So take notice, trendsetters, white may be the best color for this new, hopeful year!

I was visiting one of my daily Internet stops, Fashion Week Daily, and ran across a link to an always-intriguing "worst dressed" list. I was shocked when the Daily News' "Worst looks of 2008" listed Anna Wintour as number two worst-dressed of the year. I thought Ms. Wintour's spot on the list was undeserved...the dress looked great! Wintour was dressed appropriately for the Met's gala, "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy," in a silver gown, complete with metallic details and Princess Leia-like embellishments. That the ensemble (a Chanel gown, no less) was too out-of-this-world is quite the bold claim for the editor-in-chief of the "bible" of the fashion industry.

One youngin' who's been high on the fashion radars recently (ahem, a full editorial spread in Bazaar's October issue) is the darling Miss Emma Watson. I don't usually swoon over the fact that celebs take a (perhaps shallow) interest in fashion, but this newbie at least seems to really appreciate the industry...and she's certainly got the style thing down. Good for her!

Feathers, Feathers, Everywhere

One thing I've been noticing a lot of this season are feathers....and I LOVE it! Feathers are adding flair and fabulousness to skirts, blouses and even shoes this fall. A fun, new twist on this trend is the incorporation of these pretty plumes on headbands, bobby pins and hair clips. These fierce new accessories can be stand-out statement pieces (à la SJP in Sex and the City), or subtle surprises used to vamp up any outfit.

Although I am very much enjoying this new trend, I am not enamored enough to drop $35, $50 or even $158 (as in Jennifer Behr's Wide Feather Headband, sold at Saks) to adorn my locks. Let's not be silly. You could always enjoy this trend by making your own simple version: by gluing one or two feathers (bought at your local Hobby Lobby) to a bobby pin or plastic headband of your own. A much more economic way to enjoy this trend!

So if you're looking for something to fall in love with this autumn, grab a feather, stick it in your hat, and be proud to be sporting this new look.

To Wear...Or Not to Wear? You Tell Me...

So, I was sure of the fact that the over-worn leggings trend of two seasons ago was completely over. After the last cool days of winter '07 slipped by, I folded up my black cotton go-to pants for good (or so I thought). I carried on with my fashions with the distinct notion that leggings are "out" and anyone who wore them was painfully behind the times. After carrying on like this for at least a year and a half, I picked up viewing the Sartorialist blog (www.style.com/fashionshows/sartorialist/2008/09/24/) again when the Spring 2009 fashion weeks were in full swing. While gleefully browsing through Mr. Schuman's photos of impossibly stylish boys and girls, looking out for the latest fall obsessions, I noticed a trend that had not appeared on my fashion radar (at least not positively) in a very long time. Yes, I am talking about leggings. And not those new fangled second-skin leather look-alike leggings; I'm talking black, (what appear to be) cotton, lower-calf length leggings...very reminiscent of those very ones I so confidently embraced two years earlier. Stylish femmes at shows from Sportmax to Ferragamo to Marni were sporting the said trend. They were wearing leggings, and still looked très chic. As I began to see the pants in photo after photo, I started to reconsider and gain confidence in the old ensemble. I was experiencing a bit of congnitive dissonance since I had been such an avid opponent of leggings for so long now. But, I have to admit, I am beginning to reconsider the leggings of late...I even wore them out last night! So readers, does this mean that the über comfortable, positively tried and true legging trend of fall/winter '06-'07 is back with as much style as it had at its birth (well, re-birth for those who sported them in the 80s)?? What do you think?

An Autumn in Texas

It's finally arrived...my favorite time of year, fall, has finally rolled around, and it's evident that I'm not the only one in Texas giddy over the change in season. It's a natural tendency for fashionistas and fall-o-philes alike to bust out their favorite autumn ensembles as soon as mid-September hits, in spite of the still scorching temps. Some view this switch to stereotypical seasonal attire as jumping the gun and silly because "it's not even cold" (as one of my roommates correctly observes). However, it's my theory that Texans are not accessorizing with scarves, boots, and (for the very brave) sweaters while the mercury holds fast at a warm 90 degrees because they are cold, but because, they are in fact, thrilled for the new season. Even though the leaves don't always change and sometimes even Christmas can be enjoyed by the pool in Texas, I give kudos to those brave girls and boys who unwrap their bundle-up pieces and wear their cool-weather gear with pride, just for the sake of celebrating fall.
